Fon WiFi Routers go Web 2.0 Savvy – Fonera 2.0N

Apart from writing on the Indian Telecom space, I like innovation and here is one such product that makes me write about it with a WoW feeling. At first in 2006, Fon / Foneras[ WiFi Spot] was to have FREE WiFI network. The startup is backed by Valley’s most innovative company – Google.

I have version of their router which is semi-intelligent [ has some connected interactive features] However, Fonera 2.0N is much more than that and is closely mapping Web 2.0 successful applications. Complete features of the Fonera2.0N can be seen here. The away from home features Free WiFi Roaming, 3G to WiFi and Self Tweeting are simply cool.

Now why is this development so exciting ? Routers in my opinion for a decade did nothing other than routing / providing wireless interface, print sharing, etc all related to networking. However, innovators at Fon went ahead with disruptive technology and are fast syncing Web 2.0 apps. This will disrupt the market place as engineers begin to deploy more intelligence and features into it 🙂

I am going to write to Martin Varsavsky and see if he can come up with something exciting for the Indian market to connect atleast half a Billion people, What say ?

  1. I’m afraid some of your information is incorrect. In 2006, Fon intended to launch a network of laptops running their captive portal software to provide wifi “femtocells” for VOIP handsets. Interviews with Martin Varsavsky speak of his vision of challenging the prices charged by monopolistic telcos. As with this, Fon has completely changed their business plan numerous times, and pretend that their current form is what they’ve always been.

Foneros (members who operate a Fon hotspot) are generally disconnected with the direction Fon is taking the company and the system. One major thorn in our side is Fon’s tendancy to offer free access to our network to the customers of any company which “partners” with Fon.

I don’t think I am wrong anywhere as I am merely talking about the technology and the advancement of the product syncing in other features.

You can check out their web page if you think i am incorrect.
