Vodafone India’s Mobile Data [3G] revenue grew by meager 4% to INR23.9bn. This explains the weak data absorption, which is worse than Idea’s 7% and Airtel’s 10% growth. This is led by 13.5% data volume growth, largely offset by a
sharp 8% data pricing fall in line with industry’s data rate fall reaching INR 0.28/mb. Data usage / user has increased 11.5% to 438mb/month led by 9% increase in 3g subscribers 25.9mn (consuming higher data), but overall data subscriber growth have remained flat.

Idea Cellular management hosted a conference call today to provide update on data business and 4G in particular. As part of data network expansion [3G + 4G], Idea will deploy 30-35K BTS in FY16 against our forecast of 20K BTS. This should impact capex forecasts favorably, and sure enough, management indicated annual capex is unlikely to increase further from FY16 level. We highlight that by adding 30-35K BTS, Idea is more than doubling its mobile data capacity[3G + 4G] in FY16, as the total number of 3G BTS was 30.3K as of Mar-15.

Airtel’s Mobile Data traffic growth of ~18% qoq was much better than that seen in past two quarters while pricing decline accelerated to 4.7% qoq; data usage/sub jumped 8% qoq to 706MB. Although churn rate increased 80bps qoq to 3.3%, company attributed this to focus on acquisition of rural subscribers even as churn is still at industry leading levels. Data revenue grew 67%/12% YoY/QoQ. Sequential data revenue growth was higher than Idea’s 10%. ARMB fell 4.7% QoQ to 25.6p. Of Airtel’s total customer base, 9.3% is on 3G compared with Idea’s 10.3%.
