Anybody tracking the Indian Telecommunications sector can say that Sunil Mittal lost sight of India when he went for acquisition in Africa and other countries as Indian market threw lots of surprises. Worst nightmare for Mittal is his entire Revenue model in Voice being under threat as Reliance Jio wants to offer FREE Voice Calls forever. Airtel is also severely lagging in offering huge Mobile Data Bundles compared to Jio. Airtel not only neglected but turned clod shoulders towards its DSL Broadband Subscribers for over a decade now – No F***ing innovative offerings nor upgrade in Infrastructure to offer higher speeds barring few areas of only Metro Cities [Forget Tier II and Tier III] where FTTH was laid.
To date, all the Indian telcos have had Continue reading Fixed / Mobile Convergence – Airtel Feels Heat before Jio FTTH Triple Play Launch

With its significant acquisition of spectrum in 2500MHz, 2100MHz, and some in 1800MHz, it has 4G coverage in 17 circles, which cover 91% of its revenues and 94% of mobile‐data revenues. Vodafone has faced capacity issues of late, and this addition was expected; nevertheless, Vodafone’s acquisition in 2500MHz, which does not have the evolved handset ecosystem of 1800MHz or 2100MHz (3G), surprised us.
Airtel’s spending, at Rs 142bn, was significantly higher than expectations. It acquired Continue reading Vodafone’s Surprise Buy of 2500Mhz Spectrum in Big Spectrum Auction 2016
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea [A-Vo-Id Operators] have come up with a very clever strategy to counter Reliance Jio Infocomm’s Mobile Data revolution. A-Vo-Id lobby will split the Indian Telecommunications services market based on Voice Vs 3G/4G Mobile Data. Justifying their stand, they put up an argument that 2G phones still dominate. Of the approximately 1 billion connections, there are 750m/200m/50m 2G/3G/4G handsets. [We estimate there are 65 Mn 4G handsets expected to reach 100 Mn by end of 2016] The 4G market will move to bundled plans whereas 2G/3G will remain unbundled.
Annual subscriber additions in India is about 75 Mn. A-Vo-Id lobby further assumes Continue reading Airtel, Vodafone, Idea to divide market into Voice vs Mobile Data to counter Jio

Barring few circles, we expect most of the spectrum to be sold at current Continue reading India’s Biggest Telecom Spectrum Auction – Tepid Demand
