Moser Baer’s retail DVDs hit shelves

Moser Baer, the low cost manufacturers of CD / DVD media products had announced its intention to enter the home entertainment market by launching Indian movie VCD / DVDs for as low as Rs 34 [$0.75]. Moser Baer has fulfilled its promise by launching 101 Tamil titles. Moser Baer is in neogtiations with various Producers and Content owners to acquire rights for more than 7,000 titles.

Where does this leave DVD rental companies like Madhouse and SeventyMM ? Sameer Guglani, CEO, Madhouse, compares this to T-series vowing to bring down the prices of audio casettes in 90s. Nandini Hirianniah, Chief Product Office @ Madhouse in an e-mail resposne said,

This is good for the Home Video Market overall. If there are more players looking at formalizing this sector, it means good for the business, in all. What would be interesting to see are the kind of titles.

SeventyMM didn’t want to comment on this development. Also, the overhyped IPTV along with Cable and Dish service providers will want a pie of this market.
