The extension of promotions by Jio were a negative for Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone Lobby as incumbents would have expected some of their customers using free Jio services to start paying them once the free services of Jio concluded; however with free services from Jio continuing for one more quarter, the expected recovery is delayed. Jio’s free service put pressure on all existing operators and is driving industry consolidation. Smaller operators with low revenue market share, low data investments, low margins and Continue reading How Jio Launch Disrupted entire Indian Telecom Industry ?
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea [A-Vo-Id Operators] have come up with a very clever strategy to counter Reliance Jio Infocomm’s Mobile Data revolution. A-Vo-Id lobby will split the Indian Telecommunications services market based on Voice Vs 3G/4G Mobile Data. Justifying their stand, they put up an argument that 2G phones still dominate. Of the approximately 1 billion connections, there are 750m/200m/50m 2G/3G/4G handsets. [We estimate there are 65 Mn 4G handsets expected to reach 100 Mn by end of 2016] The 4G market will move to bundled plans whereas 2G/3G will remain unbundled.
Annual subscriber additions in India is about 75 Mn. A-Vo-Id lobby further assumes Continue reading Airtel, Vodafone, Idea to divide market into Voice vs Mobile Data to counter Jio
The much awaited Jio Tariffs have taken the industry by storm. It could well disrupt the industry as cheaper data and free unlimited calls have sent telecom captains into tizzy and massive anxiety. Bundling of free voice along with data service offering was not at all a surprise to us. However, we are not sure whether free voice (which would be VoLTE) would be billed any data or Continue reading Jio Silences Airtel / Vodafone / Idea Cash Register with Free Unlimited Calling
Vodafone India’s Mobile Data [3G] revenue grew by meager 4% to INR23.9bn. This explains the weak data absorption, which is worse than Idea’s 7% and Airtel’s 10% growth. This is led by 13.5% data volume growth, largely offset by a
sharp 8% data pricing fall in line with industry’s data rate fall reaching INR 0.28/mb. Data usage / user has increased 11.5% to 438mb/month led by 9% increase in 3g subscribers 25.9mn (consuming higher data), but overall data subscriber growth have remained flat.
Vodafone added 7,600 3g sites during Continue reading Vodafone India Mobile Data Growth Worst among A-Vo-Id Operators
The Department of Telecom (DoT) conducted a pre‐bid conference for addressing the queries and concerns of the stakeholders for the upcoming 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz mega spectrum auction in Feb 2015.
One of the major points of discussion was the block size of 5 MHz for 900 MHz band where TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) had Continue reading Incumbents Oppose DoT’s 900MHz Spectrum Block Size in Pre-Bid Conference
In the TRAI open house discussion on “Spectrum valuation for licenses expiring in 2015 and 2016“, there was a consensus among all telecom stakeholders that the amount of spectrum put for auction is inadequate. TRAI has already indicated that more spectrum should be made available. All telcos made recorded statements that more spectrum should be made available in the 900MHz and 2100MHz bands for the 2015 auctions [Both the Bands are suitable for deployment of 3G Wireless Broadband] DoT has also written to the government on scarcity of spectrum for mobile broadband services and indicated that more spectrum should be made available. All the stakeholders are pro more spectrum and will coerce the government to make more spectrum available. Right from Day One when Consultation began for Spectrum Auction I’ve been telling the DoT/ TRAI to come out with a clear Roadmap on Spectrum, but what else could have been expected from the Corrupt Governance of the Congress led Government ?
