Exclusive: BSNL, CMD will launch IPTV in few hours from now for Puneites. Pune is the city where BSNL tested its IPTV and will officially launch for consumers tomorrow. The Picture on your left is at the Trial Run of IPTV.
Here is the information we at goBroadband have obtained for you.
- BSNL will sell a Triple Play package – Voice [Land Phone], Video [IPTV] and Data [Broadband]. If you have Airtel Broadband, you cannot subscribe to IPTV from BSNL.
- The Good News or rather the Fantastic news is, they have clarified my doubt about Data Download while using IPTV. IPTV Traffic will not be counted as Data Transfer on your Internet Broadband Package. Hurrah!!! How are they going to do it ? Udi, a reader of our blog working on IP Media, clarified that it is doable. BSNL’s copper network is capable of running tons of data and he thinks BSNL will probably have VOD servers on their own network.
- You can watch IPTV on your Computer or on your FlatScreen TV without any hassle. I wonder if some company in Taiwan will now manufacture USB Powered / Wireless TV Tuner Card so that I can hook it to my laptop and watch TV
- Tentaive Cost for Triple Play Package – Rs 600 for Installation. RS 3,600 one time set top box charge or it can be rented at a monthly rental of Rs 100 but you need to pay refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500. The charges for IPTV basic services is Rs 250 / Month. Includes all channels that cable operators are providing. I didn’t ask about premium pay channels.
- Their are various plans for Movie on Demand with price ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 75 depending on the movie. Rs 75 for premium movies. All taxes[ Service, entertainment, etc] are additional.
So can BSNL deliver the same quality of Audio and Video as Dish TVs ?

I would be intrested to hear more on how it take care of ‘channel-switching’. i.e. watching say SET Max, and the user wishes to switch to CNN-IBN from his/her remote. How long does it takes ?
This is the heights of over-confidence. All along Indians think that they are already the super powers of telecom and internet industry.
How the $%^& is it possible to provide IPTV services in Pune or for that matter anywhere in India, when the technology supports only a max of less than 1Mbps. While in the US, they are still not able to to achieve quality picture on IPTV with broadband speeds as high as 6Mbps. Even Bill Gates says that the technology is not there yet and India boasts of IPTV.
Remember those days in the 80s to 90s where every Indian just watched those pirated Bollywood movie VHS tapes on video….desperately watched regardless of the f*****-up quality. That’s what this IPTV is all about,….everyone will watch the TV when suddenly the connection craps out or the picture is blurry or there’s no sound but only pcture is visible and vice versa.
Enjoy IPTV, I’ll wait for another 5 yrs to actually mature and then subscribe to it.
Hi there, i am one of the user of IPTV and i think its not that bad like you are comparing it with 80’s and 90,s thing. It could be possible that some times the picture may be blurred but may be due to some technical problem. Also it is not that frequent.I am using the connection of IPTV through MTNL. The provider of the service is MywaY IPTV. But i am facing any such problem that i need to compare it with old days. I think in future it will be in seen every where. There is a solution if there is a problem.

I too like that idea but with BSNL giving Phone, BB and IPTV you will be in wilderness if the BSNL line gets disconnected and You will no communication no entertainment and life will be miserable
If they guarantee the repair with in 2 to 3 hours everybody will subscribe for BSNL.Alas that will always remain a dream in Inida
