TRAI adopts 3rd Party suggestions for IPTV Regulations

TRAI has come out with final recommendations for providing IPTV services in India. On the definition of IPTV, TRAI accepted Microsoft’s suggestion to adopt ITU’s definition of IPTV rather than Cable or I&B Act’s definition.

Telecom companies [Mobile or Wireline], Cable Operators and ISPs with networth over Rs 100 crore are eligible to provide IPTV service in India. Service providers shall be just carriers / distributors of any content [TV / Video / Audio, etc] that has been legally produced and eligible for broadcast in India. [What is Legal ? Current laws do not permit more than 26% foreign ownership in news channels in India, so on and so forth] This essentially means the Government wants to open the IPTV platform for entertainment, education, etc except “news”, which sounds reasonable in the national interest.

TRAI also got rid of the transmission platform being wireline as advancements in wireless technologies may make it feasible to serve IPTV on such networks. IPTV can be independent of triple-play, which is a good move as I think their are more Non-Internet consumers who watch TV.

It will be few more yeas for IPTV to become an established platform in India and triple-play to kick off, until then Dish TV rules!
