How Idea Managed to beat Bharti Airtel in Traffic Growth

First, my apologies that I couldn’t cover neither Idea Cellular nor Bharti Airtel Results & Analyst Call as I am stuck in Mumbai for some personal work. However, going through the data, I find it interesting to note that Idea Cellular has punched straight into the face of Bharti Airtel in tems of Traffic Growth for the quarter ending Dec-2009.

Idea’s minutes grew 15% QoQ much faster than Bharti (6.7%) even after adjusting for lower base and the impact of J&K ban on the latter. The reasons could be – more proactive tariff cuts by Idea especially in its newer circles and impact of Tata Docomo’s phased launch.

For Bharti, the revenue contribution from circles of Tata Docomo’s initial launch in Jun-09 (AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, TN) was 36% in 2QFY10 vs. 27% for Idea. These five circles contributed 65% of Tata Docomo’s sub adds during July-Oct 09 thus potentially impacting Bharti’s traffic more than Idea. Additionally, Idea had selectively cut tariffs (Mumbai) and was offering per sec options (Rajasthan, MP) even before the broader reaction from Bharti/Vodafone came in early-November.

Uninor will do some damage even though it’s not a runaway success like Tata Docomo.

  2. idea is good in comparision of airtel and voda, because he has good plans, good network, negotiable prices and good customer care menu.

  3. Tata Docomo provid best 2G AND 3G services at good price. It has best services and advertisments.
