TRAI justifies Broadband Speed in India

Facing criticism from us and other media, TRAI went ahead and released a paper to justify that 256 Kbps is an acceptable speed to define broadband in India 🙂 According to the US FCC, internet speed greater than 200 Kbps is considered as broadband 🙂 Australia, Finland, Italy and Spain define 256 Kbps as broadband while Mexico pegs the limit at 1 Mbps.

According to TRAI’s paper, they have written to all the ISPs to get rid of the “Up to 256 Kbps” ambiguity and serve atleast 256 Kbps internet connection. We have around 2.87 million broadband subscribers in India of which 96% have the 256Kbps broadband, 3% have speeds between 256 & 512 Kbps while only 1% have more than 1 Mbps.
