MTNL’s poor broadband strategy

State owned Telco operating in the lucrative circles of Mumbai and Delhi has very poor broadband and internet strategies. Officials simply don’t seem to understand the demand for broadband in these two metros. It took nearly 4 years for them to realize the potential of broadband and they say they are still “planning” for a 1 mn broadband capex tender 🙂

MTNL’s Tribrand broadband is the fastest growing segment in the company. MTNL Triband currently has pathetic 0.5 mn subscribers i.e just 12.5% of its total fixed line consumer base [Bharti Airtel has 34% broadband subscribers on its fixed line network in these metros]

MTNL is more inclined towards providing triple play service. However, I wonder who would opt for MTNL’s IPTV, when Reliance is on the verge of launching DTH and is rumored to offer free / subsidized LCD TV for DTH subscribers.

  1. Are the numbers you are quoting for Airtel and MTNL just the consumer market or does it include businesses?

I can understand the higher levels for Airtel – quality of service goes a long way.

  2. Who in the freakin world want to provide IPTV service in India ?
US and Japan does not even have the infrastructure for that, what in the world do we Indian businesses think of ourself, I think it shows off our arrogance and caulkiness !!!

Please let the major corporations (who are working on it), admit that they are ready to roll out IPTV, then we’ll figure out if we have the capability to consume it. Reliance that has been backing IPTV with Microsoft is looking at other avenues also since it realizes that IPTV is till not ready for prime time.

Please cut this IPTV crap in India… we can hardly get the broadband internet connection, why in the world for now do we imagine the impossible.

Apologies for the delay as evident by slow posting. The numbers include Residential as well as SME. But what happens is corporate phone connections are included in wire line numbers. However corporate Internet is mostly fat pipe and doesn’t get counted in Broadband numbers.

  4. MTNL is a sister concern company of BSNL and comes under Central Govt… The customer base of MTNL is nearly 5.92 million. And from past few years the graph is going down even if the Indian Govt. is spending too much of huge amount to uplift the customer base, but still the graph is going down and the main reason is their “GREAT SERVICES”. The MTNL lineman don’t have enough idea to configure even a modem and to solve a single complaint they take nearly 1 month or more because the don’t have enough workforce and the coverage area is very big. And when you see the MTNL exchange you become shocked to see their exchange, made of HUWIA equipments, and when you see the AIRTEL exchange you will find Ericson equipments just because the cost of HUWAI equipments are nearly half then Ericson.
Basically they have two type of exchange one is for 256 Kbps and one for above 256Kbps, if you buy plan for above 256 then you may get good response because for that only they use Ericson exchange.
I raised my voice at Consumer Court and submitted a online complaint and found that I am not one who is facing the problems with MTNL I don’t know why the Govt. change the plan to get more customer and spend a huge amount in ads, the salary of lineman is nearly 15000/-, I think this is a total waste. Customers are very much frustrated from MTNL. If you visit the MTNL exchange you will find many customers shouting on the Area Manager. MY personal experience with MTNL was pathetic and now I switched to another services provider and now I am very much satisfied.
