Service Matters; Not just Pricing Gimmick

Dismissing Tariff wars in the roaming segment, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Hutch-Essar and Idea have rejected proposals to lower roaming tariffs calling it a pricing gimmick by BSNL and Reliance, where the latter have been collecting higher rentals to offset the lower romaning per call charges. Airtel also said that its the Quality of Service that matters and not lower tariffs. In the absence of Mobile Number Portability [A Deadline Missed by TRAI] their is no measure by which we can say why a customer is sticking to his service provider.

Also, if this appears as a cartel move, then TRAI may initiate an enquiry into the same and may not go well with the new Telecom Minister – A Raja.

At the end of May-2007, Vodafone-Hutch-Essar is India’s second largest Mobile Service Provider[in GSM and 3rd Overall] behind Bharti Airtel pushing BSNL to the fourth place.[Overall]. Vodafone-Hutch-Essar added 1.5 Million subscribers in May-07, while Airtel added 1.85 Million.
