Sunil Mittal to Step Down as CEO of Bharti Airtel

Late last afternoon their was a word on the street that Bharti Airtel is going for a major announcement. Most DalalStreet brokers were expecting the hiving of Bharti Infratel – Towers Division into a separate company. But to my surprise, at 2:15 AM, a close confident of mine from Mumbai confirms that Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and  CEO of India’s largest Mobile Phone company, Bharti Airtel Ltd is stepping down from the post paving way for Manoj Kohli to step into his shoes.

It is likely that Sunil Mittal wants to focus more on Bharti-WalMart retail operation as I remember him saying once that the battle in Telecom is won by Airtel. Will the Bharti group now restructure and reorg ? Maybe, but I would have been happier had Sunil continued to focus on expanding the telecom business beyond India making Bharti Airtel a Global Telecom Giant 🙂
