After the run away success of the 2015 Mega Telecom Spectrum Auction in 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 band, telecom tariff hike has become inevitable for Telecom Operators to expand their Network and maintain their balance sheet in black. Since the incumbents do not have major renewals of the type seen in the past two years, the focus would now shift to operating performance and execution. The Narendra Modi led BJP Government has moved swiftly to conduct the Largest Telecom Spectrum Auction across four bands 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz in India beginning Feb-25-2015. After a series of Scams during the Corrupt Congress regime and a headless move to impose retrospective tax on Vodafone with constitutional amendment had severely deteriorated the Telecom Sector reforms. Clarity on 2100MHz spectrum availability/ reserve price, etc is awaited – we hope that TRAI recommendations are adopted in this case. The Indian Telecom Regulator TRAI, in a bold move has recommended auctioning 15-20 MHz (3-4 blocks of 5 MHz each) of 2100 band spectrum [3G Spectrum] in the upcoming auctions along with 900 and 1800 spectrum. TRAI expressed strong disagreement with not auctioning 2100 spectrum at all or auctioning a lower quantum (one block only in 17 out of 22 circles), the other two options indicated by the DOT in its communication to the TRAI.
