Can India Hit 500Mn Mobile Broadband Subs by 2020 ?

The Indian telecom industry had clocked a robust triple digit data volume growth in FY14 and FY15 with proliferation of smartphone shipments and 3G adoption leading to spurt in number of subscribers and data usage per customer. However, data volume growth is already tapering as the pace of smartphone penetration is losing steam. Along with weak macros, postponement of handset purchases by users awaiting RJio 4G launch or lower discounts on e-commerce portals stemming impulse buying could be possible reasons for slower shipments.

IDC has reported continued deceleration in smartphone shipments with meager 3.8% YoY growth in Q1FY17 versus 5.4% in Q4FY16. Mobile / Wireless Broadband Subscribers at 2.8x Wired – 55.2 Mn Users at end of 2013

Mobile Broadband IndiaThe lethargic Indian Telecom Regulator, TRAI has finally started collecting data from operators on the status of mobile / wireless broadband. At the end of 2013, India has total 55.2 Mn Broadband ( > 512Kbps speed) subscribers (~5% of the population) of which a whopping 40.27 Mn Subscribers are using it either on SmartPhones or through USB Dongles. Mobile Broadband Subscribers are 2.8x times more than Wired (Cable / DSL / OFC ) broadband subscribers whose numbers remain at a pathetic 14.54 Mn. In the wired segment, we like the progress Beam Telecom is making with its strategy of wiring the entire townships being developed in Tier-I cities with super-fast blazing speed broadband. NTP 2011 – Right To Broadband & Data Focus – Subscribers Target Achievable

The past few months have been the toughest on personal front in life with some serious health issues to immediate family members and hence was completely out of sync. Trying to get back now 🙂

Earlier this week, the Government under attack for 2G Scam and for not taking the reforms process forward made some bold announcements under the National Telecom Policy 2011 – but doesn’t spell out how it is going to implement the same without Scams and Controversies.
