40 Months after the Launch of Airtel 3G Wireless Data Services in India, the company has been able to reach 25% of the coverage it provides on 2G. [We restrict ourselves to Airtel India Coverage] In the last quarter, Airtel saw an acceleration in 3G footprint expansion with the company adding 3,122 node-Bs qoq to take the end-quarter count to 31,301. 3G data usage growth is much faster than 2G data usage growth. 2G data yield is similar to 3G yield due to smaller denominations in 2G. Yield erosion in 4Q is still being studied. Though demand is strong, promotional offers to lure more users impacted yield. Also higher weightage of pay-as-you-go rates have dragged data yield down. It comes to me as a Rude Shock that Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular have not stopped unauthorized deductions from Pre-Paid Customers by activating Value Added Services explicitly not authorized by the customer. I had reported this fraudulent practice by Airtel 3 years ago after having experienced it myself but the Day Light Loot by Airtel and Idea continues unabated.

Airtel today announced the results for quarter ending Sept-2012 and also disclosed lot of details on the company’s strategy and 3G / 2G Data and other metrics. Without getting into the financials lets straight away get into Data / Broadband, which is of prime importance to us.
Airtel DSL Broadband division has 1.38 Mn Subscribers / Customers with ARPU of Rs 971.
Airtel 3G / Data
- Airtel has overall 40.6 Mn Data Subscribers
- Airtel 3G Network has 4.01 Mn Data Subscribers
- 2G and 3G together subscribers consume 15,879 Mn MBs in the last quarter bringing the Average Data Usage Per Customer to 133 MB
- Data ARPU at Rs 43 and Realization Per MB is 32.4 Paise [This is far better than Rs 250 / GB of 3G data which yields only 24.45 Paise ]
- Data as a percentage of Wireless Revenues is 5.2%. Total Non-Voice [Data + VAS + SMS] as a percentage of Wireless is 16.8%
