Net Neutrality IndiaOver the last few weeks, the issue of Net Neutrality has come into focus in India with 1> TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) releasing a consultation paper on regulatory framework for OTT services which has a separate chapter on the issue of Net Neutrality. Airtel announcing the launch of Airtel Zero which allows toll free access to apps which sign up for marketing on this platform has seen severe backlash from Netizens. We note that regulators around the world seem to have taken many different approaches on the issue and it remains to be seen what regulation India finally adopts. Airtel’s Move to Charge VoIP will drag Vodafone & Idea in being Evil with Intra-Circle Roaming

Airtel VoIP Charged ExtraThe A-Vo-Id Lobby led by Airtel has resorted to am onslaught on VoIP [Skype, Viber, etc] consumers by deciding to charge for Voice & Video Traffic separately at a much higher rate than prevailing 3G / 2G mobile data rates violating the Net Neutrality unilaterally. The fine print suggests that the customers would instead have to pay pay-as-you-go rates (4 paise per 10 KB for 3G, 10 paise per 10 KB for 2G; 17X/52X more expensive than the respective 3G/2G 1 GB packs on a per MB basis) for data used on VoIP calls (both incoming and outgoing).
