Vodafone has primarily focused on enhancing its 4G footprint. With its significant acquisition of spectrum in 2500MHz, 2100MHz, and some in 1800MHz, it has 4G coverage in 17 circles, which cover 91% of its revenues and 94% of mobile‐data revenues. Vodafone has faced capacity issues of late, and this addition was expected; nevertheless, Vodafone’s acquisition in 2500MHz, which does not have the evolved handset ecosystem of 1800MHz or 2100MHz (3G), surprised us.
Airtel’s spending, at Rs 142bn, was significantly higher than expectations. It acquired Continue reading Vodafone’s Surprise Buy of 2500Mhz Spectrum in Big Spectrum Auction 2016
For the forthcoming Biggest Wireless Spectrum Auction, Idea Cellular has re-iterated its strategy of “Just in Time” [JIT] procurement which it has mastered and executed well over the past few years. To prove this point, in Q2-2016, Idea has exited 3G Roaming Arrangements in six of the seven circles as it rolled out its own network. [Recall, the first 3G Spectrum Auction was conducted in 2010 after the Spectrum Scam and Idea Cellular then decided to skip bidding in non-strategic circles and bought the same in 2014 & 2015 auction]
The spectrum bids will be rational and Idea will adopt a circle-wise approach based on requirements. The focus will Continue reading Big Spectrum Auction – Idea Cellular Reaffirms JIT Strategy+ Rational Bidding
The Indian Telecom network capacity is a function of multiple parameters like spectrum allocation, number of sites (base stations), number of components on each site (no. of antennae, their frequency range, TRxs, etc). Theoretical calculations also require assumptions on busy hour usage – which may differ for regions and services. Increasingly, the choice of technology (2G/3G/4G, etc.) also plays a role in determining the Continue reading Indian Telecom Network Capacity Doubles in 2 Years
The Government is likely to announce the Largest Telecom Spectrum Auction in the History of India in the next couple of months. Notice Inviting Applications is not out yet and sources in DoT indicate a delay of Month.
Of all the spectrums auctioned – 800 Mhz, 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, 2100 Mhz and 2300 Mhz, we see more demand for 1800 Mhz (4G) and 2100 Mhz (3G) bands mainly by the top telcos to bridge their 3G/4G gaps. We do not see much demand for 700 Mhz and 2500 Mhz bands given higher pricing / weaker eco-system. Continue reading Largest Telecom Spectrum Auction – Operators to Bid Rationally
Idea Cellular, the master of Just in Time expansion and execution analogous to the Java compilers running your Android Apps is in deep trouble when it comes to 4G LTE Mobile Data Networks.
In the last 8 years, Idea Cellular improved its revenue market share mostly banking on 2G Voice and 2.5G EDGE Data services from 9.3% to 18.1%. During the same period, market leader Airtel’s market share grew to 30.8% from 28.1%. Idea’s market share Continue reading Did Idea Cellular Fumble on 4G LTE ? Can it make a Comeback like in 2G Voice ?
With impending threat from the launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm, industry leader and India’s only integrated Telecommunications Service Provider made aggressive moves to acquire spectrum from Videocon and later from Aircel to rollout and stabilize 4G LTE Networks in coherence with existing 2G Voice and 3G Mobile Data Network. These deals and Jio RCOM spectrum trading / sharing deals have resulted in spectrum Continue reading Tata’s 800Mhz Spectrum Band on Telcos Radar
