Indian Wireless Subscriber numbers for the quarter ended Sept-30th are just in [exclude RCom for all purposes]. Net new additions has slowed down. GSM mobile operators added 5.6 m new users compared to 5.95 in Aug and 5.75 in July. India at the end of Sept-07 had 149 m GSM Wireless subscribers.
Bharti Airtel Limited:Bharti once again led the industry in terms of subscriber additions with net adds of 2.06m in September. [2.05m subs added in August and 2.06m in July] All large wireless operators except for Bharti witnessed a MoM fall in net adds. Bharti’s total subscriber base now stands at 48.9m. [Up by 70% YoY]
Idea Cellular Limited: Managed to add of 0.8m subs in September. The average net in the past three months – 0.87m. Slowdown in Mahrashtra and Andhra Pradesh hindered its growth.
Vodafone Essar India: Added 1.54 m in 16 circles of its operations. It fell behind Bharti Airtel which added 1.7 m in the same 16 circles. Vodafone India’s total subscriber now stands at 35.7m [up by 75% YoY]
BSNL: Added mere 0.6 m subscribers and its subscriber base now stands at 30.3m [up by 40% YoY]
The finall tally of subscribers[in millions] operator wise,
- Aircel Cellular – 8.04
- Bharti Airtel – 48.88
- BPL Mumbai – 1.15
- BSNL – 30.30
- Idea Cellular – 18.67
- MTNL – 2.77
- Spice Communications – 3.48
- Vodafone India – 35.66
Is this fall in net adds temporary ? I think so. As they extend coverage with the allocation of spectrum, existing operators will continue to grow [I am really skeptical about new entrants].
