What is common between Microsoft and Guruji ? Both are struggling to better their market share in “Search” and have resorted to rewarding their users for using their search engines. Microsoft unveiled Live Search Club in June which offers gifts for playing and winning on the website where you will be using Live Search.
Guruji, an Indian search engine has a similar promotion to artificially boost its Traffic. Looks like this contest began in late June and is still going on. Instead of resorting to such means to acquire traffic they should spend more time on Research and Algorithms 🙂 When your competitor is far ahead of Industry and Academic Research in search, never count on Marketing and Promotions to be a Winner.

Yes, I agree.
I don’t think guruji will retain alexa rank or traffic after search and win contest.
In case they will extend the contest for keeping traffic on their website then it will be their poorness that with search engine’s result they can’t get any traffic rather then promotional activity like contest.
I agree that contest cannot be the way in which they should sustain their alexa rank. After all the final decider would be the product.
But Guruji.com is a start-up and its only a few months old. I think we need to give them some time to have their product compete with other search giants. After all search is a very technology intensive play, Yahoo and Microsoft are struggling with their huge budgets.
As a pure marketing effort the contest is not a bad option to reach out to people and make them engage with the product.
I wish them all the best. 🙂
