I am a bit curious to know why is Ratan Tata opposing the COAI / Association of Telecom service providers ? He is in battle against COAI and the ministry since May this year. He first accused that mobile service providers cooked up their subscriber figures which was stronly criticized by the COAI. COAI in a statement said,
They expect front runners in a fiercely competitive marketplace to stop running in the race so that a laggard (the Tatas) can catch up.
We all know that early GSM entrants have paid hefty license fees and were thus demanding free entry to provide 3G services. However, Ratan was again on the different side of the spectrum opposing free entry and wanted Rs 1,500 crores to be charged as spectrum fees for all India 3G license.
Today, Ratan has written to the IT Minister, Mr. Maran seeking to scrap additional spectrum allocation in 2G space based on subscriber numbers and charge fees for the same. I am not sure how Mr. Maran will respond this time,[Maran’s earlier response on the same topic is here] but I think COAI will slam Ratan Tata again. Had Tata, raised serious issue of national security it would be worth listening to but the busy leaders of industry don’t want to debate on the same topic again.
So will Mr. Ratan Tata now approach the TDSAT and challenge current policies ?
