IAMAI, released a report (I-Cube) on a study conducted by IAMI jointly with IMRB International. Excerpts from the report are as follows.
- Indian metros have the highest percentage of active Internet users. Mumbai leading the pack with 2.6 Million active users.
- The share of internet users from smaller towns has increased from 20% in 2001 to 29% in 2006. While the metros have seen a decline, 58% to 41% during the same period.
- Cybercafes still play an important role in bridging the wired gap in the Indian society. More than ~32% of the people still access the web from cyber cafes.
- E-mail and Information Search / Education still comprises major chunk of internet usage in India (~60%-75%)
- Text chat and internet telephony has greater acceptance compared to E-commerce, the later still at less than 5%.
- Job and Partner (matrimonial) search is also at less than 5%.
So what about Web 2.0 dreams in India ?
