Toll Free calling gets trickier and messy

1800_mess-India.PNG Earlier I had reported about Toll Free number incompatabilty in India. The situtation is heading towards a mess. Bharti-Airtel has started its own toll free series beginning with 1-800. For instance I can dial 1-800-102-2455 to use Airtel’s “Phone Pay” service(Pay your bill). If I dial the same number from my BSNL phone, the call doesn’t go through.

Calling Dell toll free number 1-800-425-4026 from Airtel Phone doesn’t work and the call has to originate from your BSNL phone. Why are the Indian regulators and service providers complicating the issue. Why can’t they run a national directory of 1-800 service and make it a free call for consumer ir-respective of the network the call originates. Its time for engineers and policy makers in TRAI & DOT to browse NANP NANPA pages. I am damm serious, you better do it slackers!!!
