Decks cleared for 3G Auction in India

The Department of Telecommunications accepting TRAI’s recommendation on implementation of 3G is likely to go ahead with the spectrum auction said a PTI press release. Most of the bandwidth required for 3G is currently held by the DoD.

TRAI in its proposal had recommended a reserve base price of Rs1,050 crores for PAN-India 3G license. With current recommendations, only 5 operators can be accomodated and it will be an interetsing race as we already have 5 service providers(Reliance Communications Ltd through Reliance Infocom, Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd, BSNL, Tata Indicom and Hutch) with PAN-India presence who are desperate for the spectrum.

With, Anil Ambani’s decision to aggressively expand, Reliance Telecom, the GSM arm of RCom for PAN-India presence, race will hot up in the GSM segment. Two other operators, Idea Cellular Limited and Aircel India, which have recently obtained approvals for PAN-India expansion are unlikely to budge out of the 3G race. Where do you see the spectrum rates heading ?

From e-learning to m-learning

The west is caught in converting traditional softwares like spreadsheet and wordprocessor into web enabled tools like Writely and Google spreadsheet. While in Pune, India, Kalzoom a startup which is aiding e-learning is moving up the value chain to also aid m-learning.

Kalzoom has expertise in m-enabling the traditional e-Learning content into formats suitable for your mobile, depending upon the types of devices envisaged. They are doing this on behalf of a client in Singapore. However, the going is not so smooth as Sunderaraman COO of Kalzoom said that ,

One needs to decide on the kind of content that can be framed in a downloadable format.

Also “search” is another feature they must work on. Maybe Google mobile labs can come to their rescue.

AOL Calendar & Google’s deal, An Insider’s view

As Infoworld reports that AOL is testing new AOL calendar, webmail and a toolbar for firefox browser. Their couldn’t have been a better time to report this development. Just a day after the Billion Dollar Google AOL deal. I am not going to talk about the deal as more than million people have already spoken about it.

Here is an insider look at Google AOL or AOL Google deal. This is just one of the things I am speculating as Google likes to keep the terms closed. If you have noticed, Google is aggressively spending and supporting to get FireFox installed on as many clients as possible. AOL’s proprietary and lousy client uses Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as the engine to drive. If Dr. Eric Schmidt was careful in spelling terms of the deal, then I am sure he wouldn’t have missed this clause of integrating FireFox browser in AOLs client throwing away Internet Explorer.

Latest statistics from W3Schools indicate that Non-IE browsers have a market share of 33% with FireFox leading at 19.6%. If Google replaces FireFox as the engine in AOL client, then expect FireFox to gain significantly over Microsoft’s IE.
